Ryan is a bilingual Japanese and English director, writer, and editor from the United States. He founded Cutters Studios Tokyo in 2012 as a hub where great artists from around the world can push the boundaries of storytelling and film craft. Ryan attended high school in Switzerland and studied at Sophia University in Tokyo before cutting his teeth as an editor at Cutters Studios in Chicago and later at Cutters Studios LA, where he led notable film campaigns for Volvo, Cadillac, Coca-Cola, Mercedes Benz, Vevo, Nissan, and many others.

As a commercial director, Ryan is renowned for pairing strong, character-driven narratives with striking visuals and immersive soundscapes. He is sought-after for high-impact campaigns, from major product launches to brand milestones and global communications.

Recently, Ryan has developed and directed acclaimed commercial campaigns for BMW, Mini, Nike, All Nippon Airways, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, YKK, Resort Trust, and Hyatt Hotels. Ryan’s track record includes multiple Cannes Lions, accolades at ADFEST and the Spikes Advertising Festival, a Hugo, a TED “Ads Worth Spreading” award, and a craft award at the 53rd ACC Awards in Japan. He is currently scripting and developing a number of film and TV projects set for release starting next year.
